Assignment 1 Submission 3: Critical Reflection

The two goals I have set for myself during the start of the course were to gain confidence and speak comfortably in an impromptu situation, and to be a more proactive communicator when socialising with friends and classmates.

I learnt that confidence comes from knowledge and passion. When the speaker is knowledgeable and passionate about a topic, regardless of the situation, confidence comes naturally. One specific class activity helped me achieve this goal, the impromptu group sharing on articles and informative websites in class. Being placed in a situation where I have a limited time to absorb and share large amounts of new knowledge with my classmates, taught me to be engaging and concise in my delivery and content, and also confident and comfortable to speak in an impromptu situation.

When doing group projects, my detail-oriented nature results in my role as a contributor instead of a leader. However, after much encouragement from my classmates, I decided to assume a leadership role in the course’s team-based research project. To better manage and lead the team, I had to communicate frequently with my teammates. I had to gain a better understanding of their strengths, weaknesses and working style, to efficiently delegate roles and distribute parts for my teammates to complete. This opportunity pushed me to be a more proactive communicator when socialising with my friends and classmates.

As the team leader of the research project, I took it upon myself to oversee the entire progress of the technical report. However, I ended up neglecting my parts in the process. I learnt that I was not able to manage multiple tasks efficiently and had the tendency to sacrifice one for another.

My detail-oriented nature has also resulted in me micromanaging the entire research project and technical report. By nitpicking at small segments of my teammates’ work, the progress of the research project has slowed down significantly. My preference in working alone has resulted in my lack of trust in others to complete the task to a standard I deem satisfactory.

My lack of ability to work well with others has also affected the way I have delegated tasks to my team. I realised that my decision to split the project into individual segments resulted in segmentation and inconsistencies in the technical report. Requiring additional reviewing and editing to create cohesion and one writing voice.

I learnt that I should not expect others to work and think the same way that I do and that I should not assume that they are on the same page as I am, especially when I have failed to explain my stand clearly. I learnt that I need to be more objective, neutral and sensitive when communicating ideas and resolving conflict within a group. A leader should listen and consider the opinion of others, something I have not been able to do consistently during the entire research project. I learnt that leaders need to be patient and understanding, while still being confident and forward-thinking, to lead a team well.

  2. Thank you, Jamie, for this self-critical reflection. It's a sharp-edged analysis in review of some of your learning experiences in the module and reactions to the project.

As always, I appreciate the fluency and the insights.

Thank you for your hard work and for the penetrating questions about various aspects of the English language, the module assignments and whatever had been discussed in class. You really are a pleasure to work with, even when the ninja side of you comes out in full force.

    And best wishes,

    Brad
