[Edited] Assignment 2: Reader Response Final

In the article “Hotel New World Collapse”, Lim (2009) reported on the aftermath of the collapse of Hotel New World, including brief details on the causes that led to the structural failure. Following the collapse, initial rescue attempts were hampered by the lack of rescue personnel and tools specialising in structural collapse. Lim stated that international tunnelling professionals and specialised equipment were brought in to assist with rescue efforts. Nearby establishments were re-purposed as command and support centres by the authorities. According to Lim, these efforts resulted in the rescue of 17 individuals. Lim highlighted that the Commission of Inquiry determined that “inadequate structural design”, unqualified draftsmen and a new roof installation caused the collapse. The Commission proposed that the government should be more proactive in the building industry to prevent future failures. Consequently, the Ministry of National Development was assigned to perform structural aud

According to Tejani (2018), the burning of fossil fuels for the generation of electricity increases carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere and is one of the main cause of global warming. Tejani (2018) established that energy from large power grids is easily lost through poor electricity distribution management and electricity theft. Therefore implementing multiple localised sustainable energy sources will “[avert] global warming and [promote] growth and development” in India’s energy sector. Assignment 1 Submission 3: Critical Reflection

The two goals I have set for myself during the start of the course were to gain confidence and speak comfortably in an impromptu situation, and to be a more proactive communicator when socialising with friends and classmates. I learnt that confidence comes from knowledge and passion. When the speaker is knowledgeable and passionate about a topic, regardless of the situation, confidence comes naturally. One specific class activity helped me achieve this goal, the impromptu group sharing on articles and informative websites in class. Being placed in a situation where I have a limited time to absorb and share large amounts of new knowledge with my classmates, taught me to be engaging and concise in my delivery and content, and also confident and comfortable to speak in an impromptu situation. When doing group projects, my detail-oriented nature results in my role as a contributor instead of a leader. However, after much encouragement from my classmates, I decided to assume a leadershi

Title Generating renewable energy through kinetic footfall from human traffic, to provide off-grid power for indoor ceiling lights Background Information “(Climate change) is one of the gravest challenges facing humankind.” According to Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, global warming is a severe problem in Singapore. Approximately 95% of Singapore’s electricity is generated from natural gasses, coal and petroleum. (Electrify 2017) However, these forms of electricity generation produce heat-trapping emissions as a by-product, contributing to the effects of global warming. Therefore it is critical for Singapore government agencies to move towards using alternative sustainable electricity generation methods for their power consumption. This will spearhead the usage of off-grid power sources to meet individual electricity needs, helping wane off usage of conventional power generation. These alternative sustainable energy sources will help in reducing the emission of greenhouse
